MATHS WEEK 9

WHAT WERE THE MAIN MATHEMATICAL
CONCEPTS OR IDEAS THAT YOU LEARNED
OR THAT WE DISCUSSED IN CLASS ? Circumference, radius, diameter and pi. A diameter is half of the circle, diameter is the entire circle and the radius is half of the of the half.

WHAT NEW VOCABULARY
WORDS OR TERM WERE INTRODUCED? Circumference, radius, diameter and pi.

Chromatography

AIM - To seperate the different pigments in inks using paper chromatography

METHOD - 1) Cut a piece of filter paper long enough to reach the bottom of your test tube
2 Rule a line in pencil 2cm from bottom of paper
                     3 Fill testtube with 10
ml of chromatography solution (water)
4 Place a dot of ink above the ruled line
5 fold over test tube and place in solution
                     6 Wait and observe
7 Repeat with two other colours
THE RESULT

DISCUSSION - Chromatography is separating the mixture of coloured compound. The filter paper absorbed the solvent ( Water ) and the water rised up to reach the coloured ink.

Separating a mixture using evaporation

AIM - To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution evaporation.

METHOD -  1  set up the Bunsen burner, tripod and gauze mat. Don't place the Bunsen burner under                               the tripod yet

2  Add approximately 50 mL of hot water to your beaker and place it on top of the tripod                             on the gauze mat

3  Add enough copper sulfate solution to quarter fill the evaporating basin

4  Carefully place the evaporation basin on top of the beaker

5  Light you Bunsen burner. open the air hole and gently push the Bunsen burner under                             the tripod

6  Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporated and crystals of solute                                 are  forming

7  turn of your Bunsen burner

                                                                              RESULTS -

DISCUSSION - We put the solution ( Copper sulfate ) in the evaporating basin and used the Bunsen burner to heat the solvent ( Water ) so it can speed up the evaporation process. After the period we left the solution on the window sill for it to naturally evaporate and left it there for 2 days. We checked on it again and it turned in to a solute( Solid copper sulfate Crystals ) ------ >

separating a mixture using dilution

AIM-  To separate a solute from a solvent in a solution using dilution

METHOD - 1. Set up the equipment

                     2. add approximately 50 ml of water or coke and a few drops of food colouring to your                             conical flask

                     3. Light your Bunsen burner. open the air hole and gently push the Bunsen burner under                             the tripod

                     4. Heat the solution until most of the solvent has been evaporate. Turn of your Bunsen                                 burner

DISCUSSION - We prepared our Bunsen burner under a heat proof mat then we put a retort stand next to it with the beaker filled with ice on the base of the stand. we put a tripod on top of the Bunsen burner and a gauze mat on the tripod we got the conical flask with regular coke inside it and but it right on the gauze mat. we put the delivery tube inside the conical flask. We attached the test tube on the boss head and clamp and put the other end of the delivery tube in the test tube

- Boiling/Evaporation
- Condensation
- distillation
- solvent
- solute
- solution

Conical flask - Evaporation

Delivery tube - condensation

OBSERVATION - The solution boils and steam is observed moring up the conical flask.
The coke drops form in the delivery tube and run in to the beaker

Dilution series

AIM - TO MAKE A DILUTION SERIES TO INVESTIGATE CONCENTRATION

METHOD - 1  Place the six test tubes in a test tube rack. Label the rack with number 1- 6.

2  Using the measuring cylinder, fill the test tubes 1 with 10 ml of water. Fill the                                            remaining test tubes with 5 mL of water

3  Using your tweezers, add a single crystal of potassium Permanganate to test tube 1

4  Gently shake the test tube until the crystal has dissolved

5 using the transfer pipette, carefully remove exactly 5 ml from test tube 1 and pour it                                into test tubes 2

6  Rinse the transfer pipette thoroughly to ensure that no purple solution remains

7  Gently shake the test tube 2 and repeat the transfer process, transferring exactly 5 mL                              of  solution from test tube 2 to test tube 3.

8  Rinse the pipette again and repeat the transfer process

our group added the solute ( potassium Permanganate ) into the solvent (water) we lightly shaked the test tube for a while, it slowly turned in to a dark purple colour we did the same thing again and again for the next 5 test tubes except using the first test tube as our "solute" it turned into a lighter purple because of the amount of water we added in the test tubes.

The horror of the black plague by Ananada Braxton

In 1331 China suffered a hysterical outbreak of a disease called “Black Plague”
It spread through China's population like wind killing old, young, poor, rich, weak, strong alike.
It all started with intense chest pains and soaking sweat later they began to cough up blood.
BY 1340 it spread to India by the merchants and. It was rumoured the it spread to Egypt and killing 7000 people a day.

In October the same day there was a shipwreck caused by the black death because the ship carried people who were either dead or ill from the plague. In Europe  the disease took a different form. The victims suffered headaches and couldn't bare bright light then they would have a burning fever and icy chillies along with pain on their limbs.Vomiting followed… but that wasn’t the worst, a couple of days later they would discover lumps called buboes that appeared on the neck inside of their thighs and the underarms and were excruciatingly painful. They would start of small but grew to the size of an apple, eventually these lumps would blackened and split opened with pus and blood dripping out of them…. The victims would soon be dead within a week.
