Home Ec Evaluation

Genica and I chose Croque madame as our cultural assessment dish because it relates to the country topic (France) and it is the closest dish to our favourite food, eggs Benedict. The best part of the finished meal is the bechamal sauce as it really adds the most flavour. It has a bit of tangy as well as sweetness, which really contrasted with the way the eggs was cooked. Our group would change the bread because it wasn't thick enough. The bechamal sauce just made the bread moist and soggy.
During this process, I learned how to make bechamal sauce.
Some changes made was the bacon and bread. Because the bread needs wasn't available here we resorted to grain bread and the bacon usually used is expensive so we used plain ham.

Now, Settlers, Today cards - HEC

How has food changed in the last 100 years and what have been the big reasons for this change?
In the last 100 years, food has changed because of the impact of technology by settlers. The way the natives cooked food is entirely different to today because  of the tools that they used

What was something you didn’t know about changes in Nz Food that you learnt from the cards?
When the settlers came to New Zealand, they all relied on ships, even though most didn't make it.
Settlers who came to NZ relied on ships because thats what they where used to.

What could you see happening to food in another 50 years time?
Because we overuse our ingredients i believe that in the future some ingredients will be extinct

What could you invent or change that would create a large impact on how we gather, produce or eat food?
In an article I read, 3D printed food is a possible thing that could be invented in the near future

Jam drop bisuits

What is the link to our unit (Culture) in regards to the British settlers?
The link towards our unit in regards to the British is the fact that we were later affected by what they brought over to us. For example, New Zealand wouldn't have Pavalovas or Fish and Chips if it wasn't for other countries sharing their foods and recipes.

What ingredients that you used today did the settlers not have and why might that be?
An Ingredient we used that not might've been used back in the day would be Jam, as jam might've been hard to find and would be something that only royalty used.
