OBSERVING THE EFFECTS OF ACID RAIN

Acid rain:
When natural gasses are burned, such as coal and oil, green house gasses escape in to the air. The molecules dissolve in the water in the clouds and make the rainwater more acidic than 'normal'.

The formation of acid rain in a three basic process:

  1. Pollution of bad chemicals
  2. Molecules dissolving
  3. precipitation
Environmental problems:
  1. Chemical weathering of the buildings
  2. Killing the plants
  3. polluting the lakes

We added the 3 drops of universal indicator, 3 drops of bromothynal blue, moist little chunk of apple, moist flower petal and a spatula full of moist calcium carbonate on the sides of the petri dish making sure they don't touch each other. We put the weigh boat on the middle of the petri dish and added 1 scoop of sodium with a little bit of water, stir it, added sulphuric acid and quickly covered the petri dish with the lid

Observation:
- The universal indicator went from green > red
- Bromothynal indicator went from blue > green/yellow
- The apple and flower petal meant to be a bit dried out
- The calcium carbonate was meant to be a bit crusty.
