JOB TITLE : Judge ( Kaiwhakawā )
What do you do in this job : Judge listens and takes in court cases and makes decisions
upon them on the matters of law. They enforce laws during any court cases. To make any
decisions they will need to properly listen to the evidence of witness and arguments of the
client’s lawyers. Judges come to decisions on legal cases or receive the decisions of the juries.
They sit through long tribunals to help solve disputes. All of the things that I stated here are the
things judges may do or do all.

Education and experience :
To be a judge you must complete all 4 of these:
a) hold a bachelor of laws (LLB) and have completed a professional legal studies course
b) have at 7 years of experience as a solicitor and/or barrister
c) be of good character
d) Have knowledge of law and what justice means to Aotearoa in the present-day
For secondary education (HS):
A tertiary entrance qualification is required to enter further training. Useful subjects include
English, history and classical studies, te reo Māori and social studies.

Useful experience :
a) Experience as a solicitor and/or barrister
b) Legal advisory work
c) Work for ministry of justice
d) Work at parliament drafting laws
Skills and knowledge :
As a judge you must have knowledge of all five of the following: NZ legal and law history, how
the court system works, other judges decisions, possible culture, gender and society issues that
may affect the court hearing, management and leadership skills so they can order in court

Hours of work : 40-90 hrs per week
Income :
Annual salary - up to 5 yrs of experience = $334k - $490k
Gross monthly income - $2,000- $5,000
Monthly deductions - a) Income tax - $2,135
b) KiwiSaver - $250
c) Student loan - $809
Annual leave : 158 days
