JOB TITLE : Pharmacist ( Taka Rongoā )
What do you do in this job : Pharmacists prepare, mix and dispense prescribed medications. They are also able to give advice about their medication and medical conditions. You keep accurate records and stock take medicines. Supervise and check the work of other pharmacy staff. Offer services like: blood test, cholesterol and glucose testing. Design and carry out clinical trials.
Education and experience :
To be a pharmacist you must complete all 5 of these:
a) complete a Bachelor of Pharmacy from the University of Auckland or University of Otago
b) complete an internship of one year working in a hospital or community pharmacy
c) register with the Pharmacy Council of New Zealand.
For secondary education (HS):
A tertiary entrance qualification is needed to enter tertiary training. Useful subjects include biology, chemistry, health, maths and physics.
Useful experience :
a) Pharmacy technician and/or pharmacy assistant work
b) Any customer service
c) Any work in the Health Industry
Skills and knowledge :
Medicines and how they affect the human body, laws that relate to pharmacy practices, alternative health treatments, hot to mix and dispense medicines properly.

Hours of work : 40-90 hrs per week
Income :
Annual salary - up to 5 yrs of experience = $45k - $75k more than 5 yrs = $75k-$105k
Gross monthly income - $9,347- $112,160
Monthly deductions - a) Income tax - $2,135
b) KiwiSaver - $250
c) Student loan - $809
Annual leave : 2-4 weeks
Length of training : 5 years
